About Our Courses

The mission of Long Term Care Education, Chapel Hill is to facilitate excellence in the training and continuing education of long term care administrators.

This is sought through maintaining an informational website and offering distance learning courses in:

  • the current core of knowledge for nursing home administrators established by the federal government and the NAB
  • the current core of knowledge for residential care / assisted living administrators, established by the National Association of Boards of Examiners for Long Term Care Administrators (NAB).

These cores of knowledge each consist of the five following knowledge areas known today as the NAB Domains of Practice for Nursing Home Administrators and the NAB Domains of Practice for Residential Care / Assisted Living Administrators:

  1. organizational management
  2. human resources
  3. finance
  4. environment
  5. resident care

Long Term Care Education, Chapel Hill provides instruction covering these two knowledge bases through development of courses, texts, study materials and manuals.

Long Term Care Education, Chapel Hill is the non-university related individual work of Dr. James E. Allen in the field of long term care education. Dr. Allen took early retirement from the Department of Health Policy and Administration at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in order to have full time to devote to the long term care administration field. While teaching, he taught, in addition to long term care administration, courses in medical ethics and the U.S. health system. In 1999 he established Long Term Care Education as a vehicle for offering training in long term care administration. Dr. Allen authors the leading textbook in the field of long term care administration and recently his book, Nursing Home Administration, was named one of Doody's Core Title in the field.

Dr. Allen taught health policy and administration in the Department of Health Policy and Administration, School of Public Health, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1969 - 2006. He is the author of numerous texts and books in the field of long term care administration, most of which are now in their third or fourth edition. His texts are used by most college teaching programs in long term care administration throughout the United States. Dr. Allen is a licensed nursing home administrator in North Carolina and has been designated a Certified Nursing Home Administrator by the American College of Health Care Administrators. He devotes his full time to education, research and training in the field of long term care administration.
